The Carl Sandburg College softball team was knocked out of the postseason after dropping a pair of one-run games at Morton in a best-of-three Region IV quarterfinal series Tuesday afternoon.

The Panthers took Game 1 11-10 and won Game 2 13-12 in eight innings to sweep the series. The Chargers end their season with an 11-25 record.

GAME 1
Morton 11, Sandburg 10
Sandburg         113      220      1          —        10        12        1
Morton            205      130      x          —        11        11        2
L: Catton 2 IP, 2 K, 1 BB

Key Moment
The Panthers plated three runs in the fifth to go up 11-9. Sandburg put runners on the corners with one out in the seventh and pulled within a run on a Maddi Benson (Spring Bay, Ill./Metamora) RBI fielder’s choice that put the tying run on second. But Gracie Rademaker (Green Valley, Ill./Midwest Central) flied to right and Kayla Wolf (Chillicothe, Ill./Illinois Valley Central) grounded out to the pitcher to end the game.

Sandburg Standout
Kelsey Hobson (Bartonville, Ill./Limestone) reached based four times out of the leadoff spot, going 3 for 4 with double, walk and three runs scored.

  • Emma Wolfe (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap) 2 for 3, two walks, run, RBI
  • Rademaker 2 for 5, run, two RBIs
  • Allison Day (Beecher City, Ill./St. Anthony) 2 for 3, home run, two RBIs

GAME 2
Morton 13, Sandburg 12 (8 innings)
Sandburg         322      301      01        —        12        16        2
Morton            104      024      02        —        13        12        2
L: Wolfe 1.2 IP, 0 K, 0 BB

Key Moment
The Chargers took a 12-11 lead in the top of the eighth as Wolf’s two-out grounder to second was misplayed, allowing Rylee Krebsbach (Aledo, Ill./Sherrard) to score from second. In the bottom of the inning, the Panthers drew a one-out walk before a popout to Benson at first left the Chargers an out away from forcing Game 3. But Morton’s Kayla Gonzales hit a walk-off homer to center to give the Panthers the victory and series sweep.

Wolf’s two-run homer in the fourth gave Sandburg a 10-5 lead. She finished 4 for 5 with three singles, a walk, a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored.
